One of the countries rising in the field of wine production is England, which included with a few growers in Wales – there are now over four hundred and forty commercial UK vineyards.  Wine-making was prolific in England in Roman times, but apart from the slightly unfavourable climate – vines were repeatedly destroyed by attacks of phylloxera vastatrix and subsequently late in the 19th century, by mildew.  In addition to the established white grape varietals – like Bacchus, Muller Thurgau and Seyval Blanc – classic varietals like Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier (for Sparkling wine production) now occupy a major percentage of hectares.

As English wine production has been making quite a revival and given the increasing interest in pairing food with wine, for our 2014 English tour – we decided to incorporate visits to cheese-makers together with selected wine producers in Somerset and Devonshire.

Our journey will start in the Cheddar Gorge before visiting a Somerset vineyard and then on to lunch in the Shepton Mallet area.  Once suitably refreshed, we’ll visit another cheese-maker near Sparkford – prior to driving west to Tiverton for the night.   Our 2nd day starts at Vulscombe a cheese-maker near Tiverton and then on to a vineyard in the Exeter area followed by lunch at another vineyard in Bishopsteignton.
