My wife and I were part of a party of 12 and we travelled up the beautiful and picturesque Douro Valley from Oporto – on boats trains and cars to Tua.
We were shown the Port cellars in Oporto and during our visit we were able to roam around the vineyards; we had at least one tasting each day and sometimes as many as three. The method of Port and wine production was explained in detail by our Portuguese Host and Tour Guides, who are themselves, wine merchants and importers.
We were also very fortunate to have, as a fellow tourist, a gentleman, who was a qualified Master of Wines and he was able to give much tutored opinions of the quality of wines at the tastings. Our fellow travellers were all wine lovers and appreciated the quality of the wines we sampled.
All of the hotels we stayed at were comfortable and the food abundant, with plenty of choice. The visits were all well organised and our hosts keen to give the party, choices in the daily activities.
We both thoroughly enjoyed a very relaxing holiday and learnt a great deal about the wine and Port production in Portugal. We would have no hesitation in going back for another holiday there, or an alternative destination, arranged by Wines and Tours.
Before the tour of Andalucia, our knowledge of sherry was confined to mainly cooking with it, a few slurps occasionally although the Pedro Ximenez sweet wine was well-known to us. During the tour, our knowledge of the subject grew exponentially with fascinating trips to various bodegas around Jerez and Montilla regions.
Jerez itself was an interesting city and Cordoba even more so. The whole trip was a gastronomic delight with hand picked local restaurants using local knowledge.
The accommodation was excellent as was the transportation and the general organisation. Iberian ham and olive oil production also featured on the itinerary which added more interest to this great week. Well done Nicholas Collis and team.
